What a perfect name for the top best device, isn’t it? I must say, it really is an excellent MD from its name to its search parameters. Very few treasure hunters may ignore XP Deus MD.

I have been using the XP Deus since 2014, which has provided me with countless hours of detecting experiences across various terrains, including city beaches, fields, parks, abandoned gardens, military training grounds, and even derelict factories. My journey with this detector has been extensive, and while I have thoroughly explored its features, I still find nuances that intrigue me.
Now, let’s begin with the history of the device.
A historical reference
The XP brand was founded in 1998 by Alain Loubet and his brother, initially focusing on manually assembled metal detectors. Their first product, the XP Adventis MD, gained some attention in 2000. However, it was in 2004 that the groundwork for their flagship model, the XP Deus, was laid with the introduction of the wireless headphones XP WS1 and WS3.
In 2008, the prototype of the XP Deus was showcased in practical tests, leading to its official launch in 2009. This lightweight, highly responsive, and wireless metal detector quickly garnered acclaim in the market.
Fast forward to today, and the XP Deus is now over eight years old. While this may seem outdated in the fast-paced world of electronics, it remains relevant and competitive even now.
The XP Deus rapidly established itself in the European market; however, it faced challenges in entering the USA and Australian markets due to monopolistic practices by local manufacturers. In 2011, XP relocated its manufacturing facility to Toulouse, France, and established Detector Electronics Corp. as its authorized representative in the USA, enabling sales there since 2012.
From then until mid-2016, XP focused on producing several new coils, accessories, a new type of wireless headphones, and carrying cases for their detectors. In 2016, XP introduced two new coils, the 22.5 HF, specifically designed for treasure hunting and gold detection. However, this innovation led to legal troubles when Minelab filed a lawsuit against XP, claiming patent infringement.
Minelab’s legal action illustrates the competitive nature of the metal detector market, where new entrants can face significant resistance. The outcome of this conflict remains unclear, and I would appreciate any insights you might have in the comments below.
In 2018, the company launched the new Pinpoint MI-6 and upgraded the XP Deus firmware to version 5.0, further enhancing its capabilities.
Following the success of the original XP Deus, XP detected a growing demand for advanced features and enhancements, leading to the introduction of the second model, the XP Deus II, in 2021. This new model built upon the strengths of its predecessor while incorporating cutting-edge technology and user feedback.

A new coil
In the summer of 2018, XP announced an exciting upgrade to the XP Deus metal detector with the introduction of the new X35 coils. Starting September 2018, all XP Deus package sets began to include these advanced coils, marking the end of the era of black coils that had been in production for over a decade. This transition signifies a commitment to enhancing user experience and detection capabilities, vital for both new and experienced metal detector enthusiasts. Alongside the new coils, the software was also significantly upgraded, reaching versions 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2, each adding enhanced functionality to the XP Deus.
While the shape factor of the coils remains unchanged—available in sizes of 9″, 11″, and 13″—the X35 coils introduce a notable advancement in their frequency range. The previous model operated within frequencies of 4 to 18 kHz, whereas the new X35 coils extend this range from 4 to 28 kHz. This metal detector is designed with newcomers in mind, ensuring that the multitude of options does not hinder your ability to find treasures. Ultimately, the number of targets you uncover will depend more on your experience and external factors than on the complexity of the device.
Experienced treasure hunters will appreciate the extensive customization options available with the XP Deus. Many settings and adjustments that may be lacking in other metal detectors are present here, allowing seasoned users to tailor the device to their specific requirements, tasks, and search conditions. Imagine a scenario where a nail, a coin, and another nail are positioned just an inch apart. Your objective is to locate and dig up the coin. In this situation, the iron signals from the two nearby nails can easily mask the presence of the coin, rendering many metal detectors on the market ineffective—they would only detect the iron signals.
However, the rapid response time of the XP Deus ensures it can successfully identify the coin. By properly adjusting the device and sweeping the coil over these closely positioned targets, the XP Deus can recognize all three items and provide corresponding signals to indicate that the coin lies between the two nails.

In the event of rain, you can easily secure the control unit in your pocket or attach it to your gear, allowing you to continue metal detecting without interruption.
Included in the package are wireless headphones, which allow you to adjust certain device settings even when the control unit is off. One significant advantage of these headphones is the absence of signal transmission delay, ensuring real-time responsiveness.
When it comes to choosing headphones, I personally recommend the WS4 model over the WS5. The WS5 can be uncomfortable to wear, especially in warm weather, and their design makes them less suitable for forest use. Additionally, the WS5 headphones have a non-removable control unit, which can be a drawback. However, they do fit snugly and effectively dampen ambient noise, providing a focused listening experience.
The device control unit
The main control unit of the XP Deus is compact, roughly the size of a smartphone, and weighs just 100 grams (3.5 ounces). It features a “click-clack” fixation mechanism, allowing you to easily attach it to a belt or store it in a chest pocket—this versatility is particularly useful since the device is completely wireless.
Previously, the control unit utilized a magnetic holder, but this has been upgraded to the more secure click system.
Additionally, the control unit includes a port for standard wired headphones and a USB port for updates. The manufacturer regularly provides firmware upgrades for the Deus, which can be downloaded from a PC at no cost.
A multi-frequency device
The ability to quickly switch between metal detector frequencies has long been a desired feature for treasure hunters, and the XP Deus delivers on this front. Users can change frequencies without needing to disassemble the device or swap coils, providing flexibility during searches.
The XP Deus operates at several frequencies, including 4, 8, 12, and 18 kHz. However, it’s important to note that only one frequency can be used at a time, rather than simultaneously.
Each type of metal possesses its own electrical conductivity, and the targets we seek can vary in size and depth. This capability allows users to adjust the metal detector for specific targets and metals effectively.
- 4.0 kHz: Ideal for locating large targets with high conductivity.
- 7.6 kHz: The so-called “neutral” or center frequency, best suited for a wide range of metals, and commonly used by many basic metal detectors.
- 11.6 kHz and 17.6 kHz: Better for finding small coins and objects.
In my experience, I find the 11.7 kHz frequency to be the most versatile in terms of target depth, which is why I predominantly use it. However, it’s wise to experiment with the full range of frequencies when creating custom programs for specific search conditions.
While the XP Deus is excellent, it doesn’t quite match the capabilities of models like the Minelab E-Trac or CTX 3030, which can operate with 28 frequencies simultaneously and offer highly accurate target information. It would be fantastic if the XP Deus could one day adopt this feature, but unfortunately, the manufacturer has no current plans to do so.
Search modes
The XP Deus offers approximately nine pre-set modes, alongside the flexibility to create your own custom search modes by modifying the existing settings. This adaptability allows users to tailor the device to their specific needs.
You have the freedom to adjust nearly every aspect of the XP Deus, including the discrimination function and sensitivity. There are also several ground balance modes available: automatic, manual, beach, and semi-automatic. With the XP Deus, learning the device is manageable, as it allows users to progress from simple to more complex settings. Materials
The materials used in the manufacturing of the XP Deus are impressive in terms of reliability and sustainability. Its robust construction is designed to withstand high loads, making the XP Deus notably durable for long-term use.
In fact, some users of the XP Deus conducted informal crash tests on the device to test its resilience. They subjected the control unit and armrest to the weight of a car, and even stepped on the upper rod, yet the metal detector emerged unscathed. Waterproofness

Cons
Batteries
A very interesting and unusual constructive approach was used in XP Deus design – its coil, headphones and control unit should be charged separately, i.e. there are three autonomous battery charging units. This is one of the MD drawbacks.
New XP Deus battery charge is enough for 11-12 hours of continuous treasure hunting (depending on the device settings). After this the battery gets low and the device turns off.
It seems that 12 hours is quite enough and not all metal detectors can demonstrate such operational duration. However, you don’t always have a chance to recharge the battery. So, if you have gone quite far this can be a problem.
Besides, you may forget to charge the battery, so you come to the place, go metal detecting for an hour and then the battery discharges and you have to go home. It is a pity.
Of course, you may say that there are all sorts of power banks and you can use them to charge the battery right in the fields, but you still have to buy them.
Besides high-quality power bank is rather expensive. That’s why buying XP Deus implies extra expenses to get various accessories you can hardly do without.
All three batteries (control unit, coil, headphones) in XP Deus are lithium-pol ones which means that eventually they start retaining the charge worse and therefore lose it very fast.
I.e. the embedded batteries wear out and your Deus is capable of only 3-4 operation hours instead of 11-12 like it was in the beginning. Sooner or later it is inevitable (the manufacturer states that it happens in 4-5 years in average).
This implicates that you’ll have to turn to the service center to replace the batteries or do it on your own. Furthermore, XP Deus batteries should be exploited properly.
Namely: they shouldn’t get completely discharged, the device should be stored under certain temperature and conditions, since lithium batteries don’t like when it’s cold.
The price
This metal detector is a professional one. Besides this XP Deus requires some number of accessories which sooner or later you will have to buy.
One day you see that you need a case for the control unit, since you want it to serve longer, another day you want to go treasure hunting on the beach and you have to buy a waterproof case etc. then you start dreaming of buying a carrying bag and power bank for the MD and so on.
No noise cancel function
When you go metal detecting close to high-voltage power lines or within some electromagnetic field the device doesn’t work properly.
It becomes impossible to use it and you have to decrease its sensitivity and change parameters which is followed by another problem, namely the detecting quality gets lower.
Though you can’t really consider the above mentioned as a significant demerit, but flagship metal detectors produced by other companies have this noise cancel function.
You have to learn how to use the MD
A lot of beginners after using some low-cost metal detector for over several years, buy XP Deus and start complaining that the device is complicated, not user-friendly, it has lots of settings and parameters and they can’t get what are they for.
Such users form the majority of those, who hate this MD.
You should read the manual, users’ blogs and forums, understand what is each setting responsible for and learn to apply all this knowledge.
I must say, that despite having some pre-set modes the professional MD takes professional study and attitude. That’s why arm yourself with patience and time to get to know the device.
Discrimination function
Another essential drawback of Deus is its discriminator – it is really awful. VDI numbers (even if the target is clearly non-ferrous) change depending on its depth, location in the ground and maybe even frequency of solar flares affects them.
That’s why the MD users are forced to sharpen their ears since they can’t trust VDI numbers. However, you also should be cautious when trusting Deus sound signals because even 4 tone polyphonic signal doesn’t ensure its complete informativeness.
Deus loves identifying ferrous targets of various shapes and sizes as non-ferrous ones.
For corroded iron target the device produces maximum high tone and short “coin” signal with VDI numbers in the range 94-98 (where cupper and large silver targets are also included).
I do know that all metal detectors suffer from this drawback, but sadly Deus has no rivals in this respect.
ACE-250 or X-terra 705 make much fewer number of such mistakes. Over last 2 seasons I did have a chance to compare signal identification performed by XP Deus (using various settings) to that of other metal detectors.
Metal identification accuracy is definitely not Deus’ strong point.
Dependence on ground type
Over mixed complex ground, highly mineralized soils XP Deus search depth is compared poorly with any other metal detector. I will repeat myself and say that any other MD has better search depth value than this one.
Without any exception.
Making ground balance higher to (theoretically) increase the search depth produces lots of ‘false alarms’ and by decreasing the ground balance to achieve convenient level of noise you lessen the search depth correspondingly.
It is very hard to find the compromise decision when working over complex ground. As a result, you continuously miss targets that are later found by those who follow your route.
Conclusion
The XP Deus is a remarkable metal detector worth considering if you’re serious about metal detecting. It requires careful study and a dedicated approach to master its numerous features effectively.
This device is ideal for those looking to transition from a basic model to a professional-grade detector without feeling overwhelmed. Designed for comfort and long treasure-hunting sessions, the XP Deus offers an enjoyable user experience.
However, it does have some drawbacks, particularly in search depth and discrimination performance, which could be improved. That said, not everyone prioritizes high search depth, and a simple digging tool can often serve as the best discriminator.
