History of the metal detector
In 2010 XP company made a breakthrough in the world of ground metal detectors when it produced the Deus metal detector. It uses unique wireless technology, demonstrates high performance, has constant upgrades with real improvements, high-frequency coils, attachable pinpointer MI-6, X35 search coil, and many other advantages has made this metal detector popular all over the world.
About 10 years passed, and at the end of 2021, XP started selling Deus II. The new device had many essential changes (not just minor ones, as often happens).
XP Deus 2 has the following changes:
- Ergonomics and constructional changes. Deus 2 control unit is now impact resistant, and you can submerge it up to 20 m, and it has IP 68 – protection class from dust, dirt, and humidity
- The approach used for ground scanning. XP Deus – established as mono frequency metal detector. While XP Deus 2 has a revolutionary approach to ground scanning – it can do this in two ways:
- ‘mixed’ set of multifrequency mode frequencies (FMF – Fast Multi Frequency), the lower limit starts with 4 kHz, and the upper one is 45 kHz;
- or at choice, the user can select one of 49 frequencies in mono-frequency mode from 4 to 45 kHz.
- Expanded number of factory programs – 12 (XP Deus has 10 programs), and extended numbers of profiles saved by the user up to 12 profiles (XP Deus had 9).
- Improved sound response from the target has two options for sound indication
- usual PWM (multi-tone system and proportional audio signal – Pitch).
- Square Sound – a 3D sound that provides the user with more sufficient parameters of audio response.
- It is equipped with brand new FMF search coils set using fast multifrequency technology – FMF (Fast Multi Frequency). DoubleD coils are represented by 9-inch (22,5 cm) and 11-inch (28 cm) coils.
- Especially for XP Deus 2, there were designed and manufactured 4 types of headsets: XP WS6 (wireless with metal detector settings), WSA 2, WSA II XL – they are just wireless ones with volume adjustment and BH-01 underwater headsets with bone-conduction
- Improved iron detection capability.

The shaft
As usual, this is a telescopic S-shaped shaft but with a new rubber grip that matches the anatomic shape of the hand, and it has an improved gripping angle. The length of the folded stem is 58 cm, length of the extended stem – is 130 cm.
Compared with XP Deus, the total weight of XP Deus 2 has become less – 800 grams (9-inch coil, shaft, control unit) and 750 grams without the control unit.
This makes the load on the user’s hand, back, and shoulder girdle almost minimal. It allows really long-term metal detecting for many hours without getting tired. It is so surprising that the device is so light-weighted and convenient compared to most popular metal detectors.
The coil
However, XP Deus search coils of X35 and HF series and wireless headset WS4 or WS5 loved by their users, can’t be connected to, can’t work, and, as a result, are incompatible with XP Deus 2.
XP Deus 2 metal detector is equipped with a new type of search coils FMF, sized: 9 inches (22,5 cm) and 11 inches (28 cm). They use both multifrequency and single-frequency modes.
UPD. 02.11.22 XP announce a new coil – XP 13×11 (34×28) FMF. Compatible with the DEUS II. Weight 570 gr, fully waterproof up to 20 meters.
If you don’t know which to choose, I’d suggest considering two aspects: where you go treasure hunting and the detection depth.
As for the treasure hunting places, things are simple – if these are very rubbished, it’d be better to use a coil of smaller size.
However, detection depth is a more complicated point of discussion.
The first thing you should understand is that many factors can influence the detection depth. For example, the ground density, humidity, mineralization, and impurity level. The depth also depends on the target type, its weight, size, shape, and conductivity. As the tests show, under equal conditions, the coil with a larger diameter detects deeper-located targets.
If your task is to find deep targets and the location is not very rubbished, I’d advise selecting the large search coil.
Multifrequency
XP company has presented its own version of multi-frequency using the algorithms that are classified as commercial classified information.
There are 11 search programs where several different frequencies work simultaneously, and there is a pre-set default program Deus Mono, that allows the user to work using one of the following frequencies: 4.5 – 7.5 – 13 – 17.6 – 25 – 32 – 40.5 kHz.
Additionally, you can use the frequency shift for each of the selected frequencies that, in fact, allows the user autonomously select from 49 variants of the operational frequency. Available ranges are the following: 4.08 to 4.76 kHz, 6.94 to 8.08 kHz, 10.39 to 15.15 kHz, 15.62 to 20.75 kHz, 22.06 to 28.57 kHz, 29.41 to 35.32 kHz, 36.36 to 45.45 kHz.
Headset
When you turn on the control unit, the headset turns on (and goes off automatically), and you can adjust only the volume. However, the WS6 headset is not just a wireless headset. If the control unit is not connected, the headset can serve to control Deus II without the control unit. The headset has almost the same functions but with different access to them.
WS6 has the full menu list with the functions and access the user can get by short/long push of the buttons. You can see from the symbols on the display when a long push is required. At this point, you will see a bold triangle (arrow), and the back arrow will indicate the option to get back and using it, you can get back to the previous screen.
Additionally, for XP Deus 2 you can get a wireless headset WSA II, WSA II XL, or BH-01, a wired one with a bone-conduction mechanism (for submerging).
Battery
Built-in li-polymer batteries without a memory effect are in the search coil, control unit, and headset. The time required for the battery’s full charge is less than three hours. The control unit’s continuous work time is about 30 hours, the headset – is up to 15 hours, and the search coil – is up to 20 hours.
Waterproofness
Deus II can be submerged up to 20 meters deep. Still, for underwater treasure hunting, you should use a specialized headset, BH-01, with a bone-conduction mechanism. The antenna should be connected to the coil, and a cap for diving should be installed on the control unit.
Control unit
The control unit can be detached and put into the pocket or attached to the belt to decrease the metal detector’s weight maximally, though it is light-weighted enough. On the bottom of the control unit, there is a speaker, fastener, and XP Connector multi-features.
The control unit has a shock-proof and water-proof case. It is intended for underwater operations up to 20 meters deep. A black cap is at the bottom of the control unit case – it is there by default. All package sets that have a control unit have another cap for diving – it is red colored.
According to the manual:
- The black cap is used for standard ground metal detecting, but it allows submerging 1-meter deep maximum.
- The red cap is for underwater treasure hunting, and it allows submerging the device up to 20 meters deep. There is a membrane under this element.
This technical solution allows equalizing pressure inside the control unit connected with the temperature and pressure gradient under water. Without using it, expansion of the elastic keyboard and the speaker sticking is possible (see XP Deus 2 manual for more details).
The display is clear and easy to read in any lighting. Besides, the company has considered the users’ complaints about small digits displayed for VDI and general overload. In one of the updates, they added the ability to maximize the VDI digits to full screen.
Under the display, there are three rows of buttons. The first row (from left to right) – on/off, menu, ground balance. The second row is settings adjustment (minus), pinpointer, and settings adjustments (plus).
Search modes and XP Deus 2 settings
The most important thing you should know is that factory programs are rather balanced, and they will do for most treasure-hunting conditions. Also, you can create your own programs and save them (for example, in the park where I found many shell casings, I had to Notch to remove the sector where they appear).
However, I wouldn’t recommend doing this until you are completely clear with the factory programs and understand the settings. If you change one of the programs and would like to return to the settings, just turn off the metal detector, and the settings will reset.
Also, when the software updates, the programs you’ve created are deleted. At least it was so before update 0.71. When I updated the software to 0.71 – the programs didn’t reset.
Program 1 «GENERAL» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 kHz; Conductive soil subtraction) – it has three tones, multifrequency. It uses low and high frequencies up to 40 kHz. It is a multi-purpose program, very stable, and can be used on all types of ground. On complex types of ground, it may get false signals. In this case, you should adjust the reactivity parameter by decreasing it.
Program 2 «SENSITIVE» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 kHz; Frequency addition) also has three tones, multifrequency, and uses low and high frequencies up to 40 kHz. The difference is that this mode has frequency composition, which allows high flexibility for all target types. This program can be used on all types of ground, with some preference for rubbished and mineralized soils. It has a unique range of selective discrimination, Notch (23-25), that excludes signals from coke and humidity.
Program 3 «SENSI FT» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 khz; Frequency addition) differs from the previous one in that it has polyphony instead of three tones, i.e., all the tones. Also, the difference is in reactivity (3 instead of 2.5). It will take time to get used to polyphony. However, it allows the most precise target identification. This means that by listening to the sound, it will be easier to understand what exactly is under the search coil.
Program 4 «FAST» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 kHz; Frequency addition) corresponds with one of the Deus I programs. But they are not the same. That one is more similar to program 3, «SENSI FT» Deus II. The difference is in how it sounds. The audio is set to Pitch mode with Reactivity at 3 instead of 2.5 and uses the square audio feature.
Program 5 «PARK» (FMF; Max. freq. 24 kHz; Frequency addition) is optimized for metal detecting in the park, beach, or other recreation areas. Notch is 23-36 to exclude objects made of aluminum – caps, and foil, usually found at recreation zones. The Bottle Caps parameter is set to 5 to remove as many as possible signals from bottle caps.
Program 6 «DEEP HC» (FMF; Max. freq. 14 kHz; Frequency addition) is a powerful program using low and medium frequencies up to 14 kHz. The program is aimed at deep targets with high conductivity for coins made of copper and silver. It’s better to use it in non-rubbished, clean areas.
Program 7 «Deus MONO» (Mono frequency adjustable from 4 to 45kHz) allows using the metal detector like the first Deus. When using «MONO» mode, the chances are low that you get false signals. Program can be useful if the multifrequency programs are hampered by a severe electromagnetic environment or if you prefer to focus on a particular target category.
Program 8 «GOLD FIELD» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 kHz; Frequency addition) is less multipurpose and stable. It is used for gold nugget hunting in highly mineralized ground. This program has an ‘all metal’ option to receive only ground signals. Program 8 uses frequencies up to 40 kHz. This is a very powerful program for gold nuggets metal detecting.
Program 9 «RELIC» (FMF; Max. freq. 24 kHz; Frequency subtraction) was created using the same principle that the «GOLD FIELD» program. Program 9 uses low frequencies and frequency subtraction, thus, it is important to adjust the ground balance regularly. With this program, you can find deep targets at extreme depth. This is one of the deep detecting programs for the places where you definitely know there is something. But you will have to dig almost all the signals.
Program 10 «DIVING» (FMF; Max. freq. 14 kHz; Conductive soil subtraction), was designed for searching in salary water or wet beach. It is very stable but less sensitive to small targets. It uses low frequencies, up to 14 kHz maximum – it is perfect for searching for large-sized jewelry.
Program 11 «BEACH» (FMF; Max. freq. 24 kHz; Conductive soil subtraction) – is optimized for treasure hunting on a wet beach. It uses frequencies up to 24 kHz, so the program is very sensitive to small targets, targets with low conductivity (for example, thin gold chains).
Program 12 «BEACH SENS» (FMF; Max. freq. 40 kHz; Conductive soil subtraction), has the most sensitive frequency for small targets, but at this, it becomes less stable.
Tones
XP Deus has always been a metal detector that you should listen to, and XP Deus 2 hasn’t changed in this respect. XP Deus 2 tone has changed, and it has become better (however, some don’t like it). An experienced user can distinguish much more sound nuances.
Available:
- 2 tones
- 3 tones
- 4 tones
- 5 tones
- Full tones
- Pitch – the closer is target to the coil, the higher the height of the pitch
Besides, when using the Tone Break function, you can adjust the tone as you like.
Unlike XP Deus, XP Deus 2 can use two types of tone: PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which sounds more like the first Deus, and Square mode, where the sound is more like Equinox.
Notch
Selective discrimination Notch is a mode with which you additionally discriminate some specific range. As a result, targets that get into the rejection window in the selected range don’t get the sound during the metal detecting process. By default, the width of the rejection window is 6 points.
Multi-Notch
It is similar to Notch, but you can use a larger value of the rejection window and add three notches, not one.
Reactivity
In simple words, this is the speed at which the metal detector can distinguish two targets located close to each other. It is useful for rubbished areas, for example, parks. Reactivity high values don’t lead to losing detection depth.
On a clean area, you can decrease it to 1 (to get a higher detection depth). The more rubbished the area, the higher the reactivity value should be. You have to sacrifice the detection depth and move the search coil slowly at that.
Iron volume
This function always confuses treasure hunters and creates many misunderstandings. The main question from users is whether you should increase the iron volume to improve the target detection depth.
Actually, increasing the iron volume doesn’t increase or decrease the physical sensitivity of the device. But when the detection depth grows, the target signal that the device can detect changes significantly, and non-ferrous targets sound like ferrous ones.
If we set the iron volume at maximum, we can hear a coin at maximum depth, but it may sound like a signal from a ferrous target. At this point, this is for you to decide whether to dig or not to dig. We don’t know if that is a ferrous target or a coin.
Audio Response
Basically, it is a tonal depth meter. This additional detection parameter doesn’t influence the metal detector detection depth, but it helps to hear the targets better.
XP Deus 2 has 8 levels of Audio Response — from 0 to 7. By setting 0, you will hear weak signals from small or deep targets, and large targets will sound loud. By increasing Audio Response, you will get louder signals from small and deep targets, but there may be many false signals among them.
In some types of treasure hunting, for example, relic hunting or trophy of war metal detecting, the high value of Audio Response will increase the search outcome. Also, it is good to use high Audio Response for those treasure hunters with hearing problems and those who go metal detecting where it is noisy.
Bottle Caps
The function allows the exclusion of some signals from caps. Mainly these are very corroded, but together with the Notch function, you can remove the majority of caps signals. Just don’t forget that among the cap signals, there may be valuable targets.
It has values from 0 (the function is off) to 5. This function is not available in programs 7, 8, 9.
Silencer
Increasing the value creates a filter that eliminates the cracking sound from the iron signal. As with reactivity, high levels will lead to the detection depth decrease.
Salt sens
If you have selected one of DEUS II three beach modes, you can see one of the additional settings called «Salt sens.» With its help, you can set the device’s reaction to the ground salinity.
It is better to use the setting when you go treasure hunting on the shore, and the water touches the metal detector search coil. Salty seawater is a conducting medium, and its effect is similar to if you put the conductive target right on the coil. All the time, you get weak false signals.
The lowest value is 0, and the highest one is 9. Such a level will be best for small jewelry hunting; however, the device performance may become less stable.
Ground balance
Besides typical settings for «Manual Mode» (only for Deus Mono) and «Tracking Mode,» Deus II has several unique ground balance functions.
Thus, Grab Mode allows keeping the pinpoint button pressed and waving the search coil to adjust the ground balance quickly.
Magnetic Ground is used only with modes for salty water and allows decline or receive signals from black ferrimagnetic sand, ferrites, etc.
Ground Stabilizer (adjusted from 1 to 3) allows manipulating the ground response level – adjusting it depending on how strong ground noise you are ready to stand. Experienced users use this option to detect the deepest targets that are dampened due to high soil mineralization.
IAR discrimination is available only in programs 8 and 9. IAR excludes surface and deep iron targets depending on how far they are from the search coil.
